Barcelona, The Civil War, and where to go…or over to you! January 25, 2007

I’m away to Barcelona on Saturday morning for three or four days. I was there over the Summer and enjoyed it mightily if briefly. However, I was wondering did anyone have any advice as to places off the usual tourist trail which had a strong relationship with the Civil War? Saw the main touristy places so anything a little more challenging is welcome…
Obviously I’m particularly interested in Anarchist or Marxist history and sites of interest.
So, all advice on good places to go is gratefully recieved.
Actually that also goes for restaurants and bars as well.

The Cedar Lounge Revolution 
When I was there last Summer, we came across a graphic-design type gallery thing, just between the port and the beach. It featured mostly fascist propaganda artwork (although there was some Communist stuff).
I can’t say if it’s still there, but I had asked in a tourist office and they directed us to it. That might be your best bet.

You don’t have to go too far off the tourist trail, in fact stay right on it.
In Homage To Catalonia Orwell describes a standoff and then a fire fight at the P.O.U.M. offices on Las Ramblas fight with Civil Guards across the street in Cafe Moka (still there as I recall). You can still see the glass domes he was talking about. Las Ramblas was something of a dividing line between the sides.

Emm i used to live their but did not look for much of the civil war. emm le olgre negra bar is quiet nice bar on sitges just off La Rambla. Scobies is good for the GAA. There is a moment to the civil war up near the nu camp that they want to tear down as it was a trivute to franco. Not sure if it is still there.

It’s about 5 or 6 degrees there at the moment, hardly warmer than here, so there’s plenty of pockets to conceal money and/or camera’s.
