There’s a bomb across the road… Suspicious device in Fairview Park… presumably due to Princess at Croke Park February 23, 2008

Imagine my delight as I drove home this lunchtime to discover the roads to Fairview Park blocked off by the Gardai. Lines of traffic halted in all directions.
The reason? According to RTÉ:
A security operation is under way in Fairview Park in north Dublin. It is understood a suspicious device was found in the park this morning. An Army bomb disposal unit is at the scene.Diversions are in place, with outbound traffic diverting off North Strand on to Fairview Strand and on to Richmond Road. There is severe congestion on the Malahide Road, Howth Road and North Strand outbound.Traffic is also affected on Ballybough Road, Richmond Road and Clontarf Avenue.Gardaí are advising motorists to avoid the area.
And the ‘reason’ for the reason?
Apparently Princess Anne is going to be in attendance at Croke Park this afternoon for the Scotland Ireland rugby match. I’m not much of a fan of rugby, I live with the constant reality of Croke Park and its presence during the Summer, and I’m no fan at all of monarchy, but this just seems futile. According to NewsTalk radio the device was ‘viable’. What a pointless charade. The match will go ahead, Princess Anne will attend. The course of history will be knocked not one iota off course.
All that will have been done is to inconvenience Irish people in their capital city and a ‘political’ project that commands almost no support will continue much as before.

Brings back memories of the good old days
Not sure what this has to do with your views on rugby, WbS!
Will w ever be free of such fuckwits
Will w ever be free of such fuckwits
I doubt it Pete; there will always be a stubborn minority who insist on playing Rugby……
…union.
Crikey. Somehow I missed all that commotion. These idiots do know the difference between Fairview Park and Croke Park, right? I can’t imagine Anne was planning on popping down to Fairview with a couple of cans of red stripe before the match. Or were they planning on striking a blow for Irish freedom by blowing up a couple of joggers, half a kickabout football team and a few dogs?
Maybe the whole thing was just an elaborate protest against those proposed middle class apartments at the fire station, eh WBS?
Sorry, what’s your basis for the assumption that it had something to do with her visit? My first thought was that it was gang-related. It would hardly be the first such device found on the northside in recent months.
That’s a good point. Normally, if one was planting such a device in order to protest against or disrupt such a visit, would one not make a statement to the media to that effect?
The media reported it as same. Perhaps you’re correct Wednesday…
Damian, one never knows…
Actually, the reports that I read said that Gardaí were refusing to link the two events.
That makes sense. I was listening to the radio around 12 – 1pm, so I guess that was early in the situation and perhaps they’ve better info to make a (non) judgement…
Yis are all wrong as to motive. It was obviously another attempt to take the head offa the Sean Russell statue!
You know, it’s funny you should say that, I was talking to some people only the other night wondering had there been any move to reinstate the head…
