A scandal not noticed… August 22, 2008

Wednesday notes a remarkable lack of response to a disgraceful set of events here. As Wednesday notes (and BTW it’s good to see the blog back in action again)…
It’s a disgrace and a scandal and I cannot understand why the migrant and women’s rights sectors are not all over it.
Good Heavens. How bad are our immigration laws,
that we don’t have legislation to help victims of
human trafficking?
Pretty fuckin bad Starkadder.
Talk about blaming the victim.Couldn’t the Court have
acquitted her of the charge against her?
It’s of a piece with a so-called ‘populist’ response, isn’t it? It’s like the Blair approach, don’t leave a chink of light for a progressive aspect to these matters for fear of being caught out, which reminds me more and more of someone on a branch moving further and further out along it and simultaneously cutting into it with a saw… sooner or later you run out of room or the branch falls off. You can’t placate the anti-immigration crew, they keep demanding more, so eventually one has to face them down. Not this crowd in power though. Ain’t gonna happen. Where incidentally are the Green Party in this?
Where is everyone in this? So far Stephanie’s blog is the only other place I’ve seen it mentioned, outside the Times. Maybe everyone’s just on holidays or something, but I’m really gobsmacked that this hasn’t become a big story. Especially given there’s a bill going through the Dáil right now that could address this but, as currently written, won’t.
BTW, thanks for sending my Statcounter through the roof
My apologies for not checking in before now.
I do find this worrying. I’ve spoken to a few people about it today on foot of your piece and they’re amazed that there is no public reaction.
Hi Wednesday,
I linked to your post on my blog.
Cheers Louise.
