A humble Chairman Ganley of Libertas resurfaces… in Brussels, in front of MEPs, saying he’s no politician. September 3, 2008

Many of us who’ve had the pleasure or otherwise of having to deal on a one to one basis with politicans on a continuing basis will – I suspect – have had occasion to smile wryly on reading in today’s Irish Times the following from Libertas founder Declan Ganley.
I would find it difficult to [run in the European Elections next year]. I’m not a natural politician. I would be reluctant to. I don’t feel like a politician. But I don’t know what politicians feel like.”
Lovely stuff. And better again that ‘he had not yet decided whether to launch Libertas as a political party to fight in the election and a final decision may not be made before January 2009′. It’s some political movement in a democracy that is – so it would seem – dependent solely upon the word of its founder as to whether it will transmute from one state to another.
Still, Ganley who as the IT notes ‘has a range of business interests at home and abroad‘ is keeping all options open. He noted “Libertas was still actively fundraising in case it runs candidates in the European elections in several EU states”. Great news.
Not a natural politician – eh? It sounds like a proverb… the man who claims that he is not a natural politician is a natural politician…
I note that while visiting the European Parliament, Ganley addressed a meeting of hard line, right wing (some very right wing) anti-Europeans. Strange from someone who has said that in spite of his anti Lisbon Treaty campaigning he is “pro-European.” Perhaps he was carrying a message to that group from his other friends on the right wing of the British Tory party who want to join up with the anti-European hardliners as soon as possible.
Very true, but our Declan has a track record of being ameliorative in Ireland and then playing to the hard-right euro-sceptic gallery in Europe and the UK. Clever fellow.
