That Libertas dinner guest list. And a big hello from the ancien régime. November 12, 2008

Whatever ones thoughts on the substance of the matter, got to admit the guest list at the Ganley dinner for Czech President Vaclav Klaus was… hmmm…. eclectic.
In attendance were:
…the Austrian MEP Hans-Peter Martin; Independent Munster MEP Kathy Sinnott; former MEP Patricia McKenna of the Green Party; Anthony Coughlan of the National Platform; newspaper columnist Bruce Arnold and Libertas spokeswoman Caroline Simons.
A rather reactionary bunch in the main (I recall being harangued many many years ago by Arnold when he was involved in a certain educational institution about the need for ‘cuts’… cheers mate). Patricia McKenna is certainly moving in some interesting circles these days.
But even better was the news that:
A spokesman for Libertas said last night it was in talks with the Eurosceptic French party Mouvement Pour La France (MPLF) about aligning itself to a Libertas pan-European party. Two MPLF MEPs were in attendance last night, including leader Viscount Philippe de Villiers.
Viscount you say? Why on earth am I not surprised?
Never mind the guest list, what about the menu? Probably of the type that would upset Roy Keane.
I have never seen Philippe de Villiers referred to as Viscount in a Le Monde. But there you go, typical grovelling Irish newspaper, don’t you think Sir Tony? If this carries on you will be forced to refer to Viscount Stansgate instead of his own preference for Tony Benn.
Or me.. Garibaldy
Interesting KevanB… Still looking at his political programme it’s hardly inconceivable he might enjoy precisely that sort of grovelling…
I have to admit that I haven’t heard all of the guest list speak, but isn’t it a little surprising just how few of the ‘name’ attendees have Irish accents.
Ganley speaks with an English accent. Arnold is English. Sinnot speaks with an American accent. Vaclav Klaus’ accent probably doesn’t have much similarity to the Kerry accent and the same could be said of Hans-Peter Martin.
Anthony Coughlan and Patrica McKenna are the only one’s I know of that speak with Irish accents. Perhaps, Caroline Simons, but I’m not really familiar with her at all.
“A rather reactionary bunch in the main”
A rather sweeping remark…
“Patricia McKenna is certainly moving in some interesting circles these days.”
Consider the company her fellow Greens are now keeping, WBS; pro-Lisbon circles in Dublin and Brussels that want to repeat a treaty that has already been rejected by popular vote.
“Viscount you say? Why on earth am I not surprised?”
‘Tis not his fault he was born a blue-blood!
It is his fault if he still calls himself that in a republic but!
Craig, let’s list them… heh, heh, small joke… Sinnott, Arnold, Simons, Ganley, De Villiers… hardly the most progressive bunch. Indeed as right wing as they come. McKenna and Coughlan cleave to their own path, but frankly I find their brand of small ‘n’ nationalism heavy going. Hans Martin did some good work on MEPs expenses, but doesn’t strike me as seriously in it for the long haul.
You know I thought I was something of political crank but my lack of an invite to this shindig proves I’ve some distance to travel yet.
I’d have it as a badge of honour Dan…
The guest list is extremely right wing: cf de Villiers on “a multi-cultural society is a multi-conflict society”). But someone please tell me that the guest list name “Gerard Lawless” does not refer to I think it does.
Niall – What is all this crap about people’s accents? Not very internationalist or egalitarian of you, old boy.
What next? Criticising figures on the basis of whether they have working-class accents or not?
“Criticising figures on the basis of whether they have working-class accents or not?”
I think that’s been done often enough already Leveller.
But as for the accents thing, it’s just interesting that most of the prominent members of the Irish anti-Lisbon campaign have clearly spent a large part of their formative years abroad. It lends a little authority to the notion that much of the anti-European rhetoric we encountered during the campaign was imported.
Leveller, there’s something in what you say, but again, having been hectored by the dulcet tones of Arnold some slightly atavistic aspect of my personality does wince. And beyond that, forget the accents and look at the track records… these guys are right of centre right.
Great web-site!!! You did an amazing job!!! I enjoyed watching the videos!!! You guys are great!
Talking about ideas, there\s this really good show, which I like a lot, and I\m sure you\ve heared about it. It\s called STOMP. What these guys do is so cool, I saw them live in NY. I\m sure you can do the same and even better. It really turns people on. Just an idea, hope it could be any helpful.
