The Dublin Central Local Elections and by-election Promotional Material – Christy Burke and other Sinn Féin candidates… Part 9 of a continuing series. May 20, 2009

Here’s a clever piece of literature from Sinn Féin which seeks to maximise – or perhaps more accurately prod to life – voter knowledge about their candidates in the local, by-election and European Election contests. So we see a clear emphasis on Christy Burke in the by-election, and then on the reverse “1 day 3 elections” promoting Christy, Mary Lou McDonald and Ruadhán MacAodhán. The comment about Tony Gregory is – for once from a politician putting themselves forward in DC – far from inaccurate.

As ever I’ll gladly post up any literature from left and center-left candidates/parties as I get it or as it is sent to me… usual address see email on right hand column.

Was Mary Lou elected before Bairbre de Brun, or were they elected at the same time? This looks like creeping partitionism to me.

Christy came across quite well I thought in the bit I saw of the Vincent Browne show last night. As did Malachy Steenson who kept his composure and spoke well for a first-time candidate. Poor old VB is a bit like some of us – obsessed with the history of the WP.
FG were out in strength down my way last night – I think yer man Hogan from their front bench was one of them. Thank God I was out when they called.
Still hope that one of Burke, Bacik, O’Sullivan might take the seat.

Cheers Wednesday. Seems to be from a bit of googling that the NI elections took place the day before the southern ones, but the southern ones were declared first. So I guess so.

Saw the debate, too. The Christian Solidarity head was certainly good for generating entertaining topics (was he really suggesting a law to effectively penalise women for working? It seemed so). Ahern really doesn’t look like a candidate who thinks he’s going to win, and it was hard not to feel a twinge of sympathy for someone who spent all those years watching the home front for De Brudder.

Burke was impressive, Steenson less so (and Browne relentlessly nailed him on the OIRA front. Would he be so brave as to do the same for certain Labour politicians, late of the same parish, I wonder?).

Obligatory Chairman Reference: the CSP candidate approvingly referring to Libertas, alone among other Irish political parties. Very much in line with we’re seeing and hearing as to the constituency that Libertas are trying to target.

EWI: Totally agree except the CSP guy (who looks like an extra from some Puritan movie) tipped either Maureen O’Sullivan or Christy Burke to take the seat.

Just watched it and I was absolutely gobsmacked that in the midst of all that’s going on in this country at the moment, two candidates were allowed to spend the first ten minutes or so falling all over each other to prove their right-wing catholic credentials. I suppose there’s still a market for that in DC (one of our canvassers actually was asked about our position on divorce) but Browne should have knocked it on the head for the nonsense that it is.

Christy and Malachy both did well.

ewi

there was a question and answers, i think. that browne steped in for bowman a few years ago when he brought up that question with the then labour leader. rabbitte for about half a minute, maybe 3 quarters of a minute just kept saying shut up shut up shut up. interesting tactic. the interview moved on wasn’t picked up or followed up in any other media. maybe adams should try it.

9. WorldbyStorm - May 22, 2009

I thought Christy was excellent. MS combative. MA detached. CSP guy completely detached…

10. anthony bosco oneill - May 22, 2009

Saw the interview, thought both malachy and christy were good. Ive tipped burke for the bye election and stand by that he is definitely the most impressive candidate in the field.

Malachy did very well for a first time candidate, interesting that brown asked him about OIRA arms and Costelloe as i beleive malachy was 9 when they went on ceasefire and 12 when Costelloe was shot. So we can add Juvenile Delinquent to Malachys list of accomplishments. lol

Or perphaps senile dementia to vincents.

The OIRA/WP link is a hang-up Browne has from his days editing Magill but he spent too much time on that and the abortion issue (!).

Christy Burke was supremely confident and I thought Malachy got flustered on the OIRA link but, from my vox-pop in the immediate area, locals will be encouraged rather than discouraged by the whiff of cordite around Malachy, whether it’s true or not.

BTW: What age is Malachy?

12. alastair - May 22, 2009

I worked a bit for Browne back in the Magill days. He was certainly obsessed with the stickies then.

13. anthony bosco oneill - May 22, 2009

Malachy is about 45. The only thing brown is obsessed with is his own voice.

The reason he spent time on abortion was to set up Malachy and Christy on the right to life and he wasnt referring to the unborn. He set up ferris the same way a few days earlier on the Dublin bombings linking in Le mons.

Christy and malachy put him in his place fast enough though as Malachy said it was a non issue on the doorstep at least.

14. Eamonn - May 22, 2009

Burke must have been embarassed to be surrounded by the other losers. Ahern seemed to be uninterested and had said earlier that he feared Browne’s ability to show him up. CSP guy is just funny and as for the cordite sniffin’ steenson, well his failure to “remember” McGiollas and Garlands support for a right wing government showed him up for the ape he is.Browne should have referred to steensons support for the voilent anti-women grouping youth defence. Poor ould Christy, relegated to the afterthought section.

15. WorldbyStorm - May 22, 2009

I forgot that alastair… I didn’t get that sense at all re Christy, Eamonn.

16. Eamonn - May 22, 2009

Christy was good and deserved to be on the show with the other real candidates and not the also rans. Browne ‘s whole attitude was one of almost comedy and gave the impression that he was uninterested in giving the panellists any real time to elaborate on relevant issues. Questions on Divorce, Officials etc.. while funny were non relevant to the election. Christy deserved better.

17. sonofstan - May 22, 2009

Christy and Mo-Jo Ahern were selected after the first show IIRC

18. Mark P - May 22, 2009

In fact, Burke got a very easy ride from Browne and I’m sure he appreciated it. Browne was so busy going after Steenson about the Official IRA (what a bizarre line of questioning at this remove), the CSP oddball about pretty much everything and Ahern about being his brother’s placeman that Burke got a relatively free ride.

19. Mark P - May 22, 2009

By the way, on another issue to do with the elections, has anyone been following the Labour Party’s flickr stream?

They actually put this piece of sexist crap up on their own website (as well as arranging for Gilmore and some of their young women candidates to pose for the photograph presumably).

20. Leveller on the Liffey - May 22, 2009

Hmm. Would Gilmore squeeze Tommy Broughan like that?

21. WorldbyStorm - May 23, 2009

He would too! :)
