Sounds interesting. Would they have a linotype machine? I remember
reading about one years ago and it sounded fascinating.

Was Ireland’s 1916 Easter Rising justified?

On an unrelated topic, I found this news of a debate on
Indymedia:

A discussion of Irish history and Irish politics today

Sean Matgamna of Workers’ Liberty (YES) debates Ruth Dudley Edwards, biographer of James Connolly and Padraig Pearse (NO).

7.30pm, Thursday 18 June
The Lucas Arms, 245a Grays Inn Road (Kings Cross)

Sorry, minor error. The title of the discussion is
“Was Ireland’s 1916 Rising justified?”

4. WorldbyStorm - June 16, 2009

Yes, they do have a linotype as it happens.

Hmmm… now that’s one debate I’m sorry I’m not in the UK to hear.

5. Starkadder - June 16, 2009

It might be interesting to see how this debate turns out.

6. EWI - June 17, 2009

It might be interesting to see how this debate turns out.

Hmm. Incidentally, everyone knows how RDE regretfully (but of course) as “Pearse’s biographer” has had to go around proclaiming how he unconsciously wanted to bugger boys, but what’s the Reform Movement view of Connolly, does anyone know? (i.e. what vices, prejudices or scandals have been uncovered, inflated or made entirely up out of thin air in order to smear a man of whom the public know little detail nowadays with which to form an opinion for themselves)

On the subject of trade unions, is Kevin Duffy who was Secretary of the Building Workers Union in the seventies the same man as Kevin Duffy of the Labour Court?

Joe - June 17, 2009

Eamonn. I work with people who usually know these things. Will get back to you.

Joe - June 17, 2009

The answer is yes, Eamonn. Kevin Duffy was the main man in BATU (Building and allied trades Union) in the seventies. There was an article in some newspaper recently about him in which he was described as “the brickie who became a barrister.”

EamonnCork - June 18, 2009

Joe, thanks very much. Very decent of you.

8. ejh - June 17, 2009

Possibly the loser of the debate should be tied to a chair and shot?

9. skidmarx - June 17, 2009

“Was Ireland’s 1916 Rising justified?”

Was it a good idea or were its margins made straight?

10. Garibaldy - June 17, 2009

ejh,

perhaps both participants in the debate should be tied to a chair and shot anyway?

11. Garibaldy - June 17, 2009

or we could skip straight to the shooting!

12. ejh - June 17, 2009

Possibly the debate could be conducted with each participant, tied to a chair, attempting to shoot the other one

13. Garibaldy - June 17, 2009

hmmm. Something weird going on with the comments. Number 12 should be before number 11.
