Groups with parents in the band…
Given the brouhaha over Crystal Swing, what of other parents involved in rock and… er… in the case of CS… er… well, summat…
Here’s two to start us off…
Spirit… the step-dad (does that really count?)… “I’ve Got a Line on You”… Now frankly, I think this is pretty cool (and by the by, Stairway to Heaven rips, I believe with acknowledgement their instrumental Taurus).
The Mystery Jets… his father…who doesn’t play live with the band since 2008. They’re not bad actually.
Anyone able to think of other bands? I’m not sure that full family groups count either… although in this curious area who the hell knows?

Happens a lot in Folk and Jazz – the McPeakes spanned 3 generations sometimes, the Waterson/ Carthy clan likewise.
In Jazz, Ornette Coleman’s son, Denardo, played drums for his dad from below the age when he could be legally employed. The Marsalis bros played in various combos run by their father Ellis – and other bits of the famiy still do. Country too – Doc and Merle Haggard, the Judds.
Oh, and Teddy Thompson played with dad Richard for a while before going out on his own.
There are also sons who have replaced fathers: Jason Bonham, and, slightly stranger, Roger Taylor’s son plays in the touring production of ‘We Will Rock You’ ……and didn’t Zak Starkey play with Oasis? sort of like playing in a tribute band to your oul’ lad….
Yes, there are those. I guess though the replacement issue is, arguably creepyish…
Ah, Spirit… 12 Dreams of Dr Sardonicus was a classic album.
About a year or so back, I saw Martha Wainwright in Belfast and Kate McGarrigle (RIP) was playing piano. Kate said the only way she got to see her kids was to tour with them…
If we’re willing to stretch it a little, there’s always Bob Mothersbaugh Sr appearing as General Boy in various Devo projects.
I did not know about the last. That’s interesting about Martha Wainwright/Kate McGarrigle.
Yes, Spirit, a most intriguing proposition. Or to put it another way… good.
By the way Ed Cassidy, born 1923, is still alive! Kudos to that man… he was my age when they were making it big… Fantastic. Got to say the shaven head seems like a good move… (strokes chin thoughtfully).
Keeping within the family but slightly off topic Loudens song about Martha is a classic ,and as for “Rufus is a tit man” how could he have got it so wrong.
Steve Earle did a few tours with his son on guitar. I think Neil Finn did also.
Earle recorded ‘The Mountain’ with the Del McCoury band which contains a father , brother and son.
I’m going to stop now cos I’ve found myself wondering if Twink ever did a duet with her daughter……
Neil Finn’s son? Bah, this is terrible. How can Neil Finn have a son of that age… although, I guess he must be in his early 50s… so yeah… he can have a son that age.
Twink you say? The lightning rod as regards mortgage relief?
D’oh – that’s ‘Doc and Merle Watson above.
An understandable error
I’m going to stop now cos I’ve found myself wondering if Twink ever did a duet with her daughter……
For some reason, a version of the aforementioned Martha Wainwright’s ‘Bloody Motherfucking Asshole’ suggests itself…
Saw the great Ralph Stanley on the stage of the Ryman in Nashville last July: his band contained both his son and his grandson – each of whom is a solo recording artist in his own right.
Isn’t the whole point of rock ‘n’ roll to get away from your parents?
Not really a ‘group’ per se – but that auld provocateur Gainsbourg brought the parent-child duet to a fairly scary place :
A duet with his daughter Charlotte from 1984. Unfortunately – it’s from that period where he just put monologues (or in this cas a dialogue) to a dodgy synth backing (apologies to Chopin).
I think this one beats Cryshtal Golf Schwing by a few furlongs in the ‘scary’ stakes.
Yikes…
Pity the poor daughter in the Trachetenburg Family Slideshow Players, who has to tour the world with her two hippy-dippy Greenwich Village parents in tow.
