… let joy be unconfined…

Okay, we’re well late to this particular party. It’s a mature platform, for sure. And we’re, well, some of us are, pretty mature – if not indeed long in the tooth. But we hope that this is useful for anyone using Facebook as their primary social networking site who wants to check in on what the CLR is doing.

We will be interacting as well above and beyond the site and all comments and likes gratefully accepted (and many thanks to those who managed to find us during our trial phase last week)!

You’ll find us by using the link on the right hand side (click on our name, not the Facebook logo) or by going here.

That’s our profile picture at the top of this, so look out for it on your travels.

Many thanks to D for all the help – actually all the work – in setting this up.

It’s all a fiendish plot to collect names…

You’re first against the wall when the revolution comes, Pidge!

Pidge - August 16, 2010

Yay! I love walls!

smiffy - August 16, 2010

Revolutions, perhaps not so much?
;)

Pidge, what makes you think we don’t already have names?

Never mind the secret police – what about the not-so-secret exploiters of data.

Every word you write, picture you post, network you expose on Facebook belongs to them.

If that doesn’t concern you, fine.

I’d hope that people will be as circumspect as they are here. For the first, I’m not sure they ‘own’ text – but they do have the right to move it around, say from one server to another. The same is true of images. Networks, well again, people have to use their own discretion. I’m on Facebook as myself, but I stopped using it a couple of months after I started. There are workarounds. So, yes, I would have a degree of concern, but…

In any case, I’ve always assumed that should one want to dig into say the CLR, anyone with sufficient authority could do so.

For the first, I’m not sure they ‘own’ text

This could be good or bad, depending on what kind of social(ist) networking you have in mind….. maybe ‘the people’ own the text collectively? or the state? or maybe ‘ownership’ of text is theft?

WBS -

I took the trouble to look up the terms of use and you are indeed right.

“You own all of the content and information you post on Facebook” says their Statement of Rights and Responsibilities. I have no problem with sharing information and I’m not concerned about political repression (for now). I just have a problem with a corporation having access to this much data. They are going to ‘monetise’ it somehow.

Their privacy controls have been lamentable up to now, and Facebook has been a goldmine for the wannabe identity thief.

That said I’m all for more exposure for CLR.

While re-engineering is taking place can we have a preview / re-edit button on the blog, please?

WorldbyStorm - August 16, 2010

Pope Epopt, I agree, it’s something that has to be looked at very very closely. Facebook grand[ish] at the moment, but who knows in two or three years? I’m particularly antagonistic like yourself to the idea of monetising. So far the only costs incurred by the CLR are for an extension of storage space online to accommodate the left archive, it’s only twenty or so euro a year IIRC. I’m toying with the notion of paying to ensure there are no ads onsite. It’s not much and it would make the environment a bit purer – for want of a better word.

re the preview/reedit button I’ve been agonising over that for ages. I just can’t see that option in WordPress on this template – and I’m loath to change the template given its familiarity to people. I’ll look again because I really understand how useful that can be.

And over the 100 mark in a mere few days!

WorldbyStorm - August 17, 2010

That’s very very much appreciated by everyone at the CLR.
