Sunday Independent Stupid Statement of the Week (sort of)… September 19, 2010

Garibaldy is unable to do the weekly piece this week, so rather than stepping into shoes I cannot fill and providing his customary forensic overview of the Sunday Independent perhaps some of you could offer up the most… ahem… ‘striking’ pieces from that newspaper this weekend…

However, I will offer this up, from Senator Harris, and wonder – not for the first time, how he was ever a member of the same political party that I and many others were (actually let me spread the net more widely, the same broad ideological movement, whatever about the distinctions between formations)…

Second, hard words. Cowen does not seem willing to act against abusers of the public purse because of his beloved “due process”. So before he lets Brian Lenihan loose on the welfare class, the least he might do is go on television and radio and give a good tongue lashing to any fat-cat group which is gorging on the public purse.

Harris himself is a longtime member of the ‘welfare class’,receiving stipends from the public purse all his adult life. He’s just against welfare for people at the bottom end of the income scale. Senator Harris, a Dig-out Bertie appointee, is shifting his position on Cowen, toadying to Cowen’s successor so that he can hopefully continue ‘gorging on the public purse’ in the Senate.

If there is one constant in Harris’s long record of activity in public life it’s kissing the ass of whoever he perceives to be his meal ticket at any given moment.

Of course, if all this is simply a bid to run from his past, it’s not hugely successful. Particularly when one is replacing one sort of rhetoric with another.

Like IBEC? That money’s going straight into the coffers of the private sector, after all, and undoubtedly responsible for the sanguine contribution of the IBEC head on RTÉ this morning, while being interviewed about this issue.

Fat-cat group?

Love to see who thinks the fat cat groups are.

No doubt public sector employees, lazy people on the dole, single mothers etc.

And Republicans. Can’t forget them.

When the Sindo was it’s most vitriolically anti-SF (after the 2002 election) it managed to get in a dig at them in almost every single article. Eventually, I have no doubt, Martin Ferris will more than likely be blamed for global warming.

Close, but no cigar.

Martin Ferris will be stridently blamed for the global warming ‘hoax’, which we will be informed is a SF plot.

I would hate to slander someone of the basis of their mental health, but is a lot of what Eoghan Harris argues not based on mania? One of the reasons he was always an entertaining speaker was this manic element and displays of wild ups and downs- often very effective but looking back on it always playing to the gallery.
