A Backhanded Compliment ? January 6, 2011

Today’s Irish Times had a piece “Hanafin and Andrews rule out constituency move”

There was a telling few lines at the end where Hanafin got a veiled dig in at Councillor Richard Boyd-Barrett….

“The next election is about the future of the country and the economy.

“It’s not about the Dún Laoghaire baths or the 46A [bus],” Ms Hanafin said.

I wonder is it indicative of what shes hearing on the doorsteps, is Boyd-Barretts support such that she fails in a national newspaper article to attack Fine Gael or Labour (or even their leader Eamon Gilmore) and just hits out at Boyd-Barrett?

I’d hazard too that the issues around Dun Laoghaire Baths and the 46A are connected with the state of the economy.

Have we already done the vacuity of “People before Politics”?

neilcaff - January 6, 2011

Yep, but that’s no reason to spare the rod.

fergal - January 6, 2011

Of course the slogan is incomplete and should read “Rich people before politics” in a similar vein the 2007 slogan really was “A lot(of people)done(in)..more to do(in)

What’s the issue with the 46A? are they upset out in Dun Laoghaire because it now goes to the Northside and lowers the tone of the whole route?

irishelectionliterature - January 6, 2011

I think it rerouted to take out the whole Monkstown Farm area. The area taken out happens to have a large number of Council /ex Council housing.

Ah, OK – thanks.

Be that as it may, I will promise a high preference to any candidate who promises to bring us back our 10. Going down the Norrier on a 46A is just plain wrong.

sonofstan - January 6, 2011

+1 on that.

(A codger writes)It was the number of the route all the way back to the aul’ trams, you know

I see the CP USA using People and Nature Before Profit. I quite liked that.

ejh - January 6, 2011

A bit convoluted, no?

(By the way, you might be amused to know that the journalist who I was going on about on Twitter yesterday has started following me today. Presumably he checks every day to see if anybody’s slagging him off on Twitter.)

Garibaldy - January 6, 2011

That’s fantastic.

Devil’s advocate time: I never have given FF a preference of any kind – but if I did it might be to Hanafin.
I earn my living in the arts and education areas and most people in each area think Hanafin is the best minister for education and then for the arts there’s been since the mid nineties. She goes to the trouble of knowing what she’s talking about, instead of just ‘taking on the unions’ and ‘getting value for taxpayers’ money’ and all that stuff that being a minister is supposed to be about.
I speak only of her as a departmental minister, of course, not of her party or ideology.
And the scariest part of the 46a route is the bit between Dun Laoighre town and Monkstown Farm.

Maybe I’m perverse, but when I saw that, I didn’t think of it as a compliment, backhanded or otherwise. What I saw was somebody denying her own profession while wanting to stay in it and be given the status is confers. (Added ire is the fact that the reason her profession is discredited is so much down to the behaviour of her party and many of its members at both national and local levels.)
