“Now the people are waiting for a new political annunciation. As de Valera said, preparing to exit in the bleak year of 1958, “I am in no way despondent about the future of our country. I believe our sun is but risen, when others are setting.”

Not to worry, “De Plain People of Ireland” will look into their hearts and return to the fold – see jaw dropping article from today’s IT Review section.
“The days will be longer by the time the election takes place; there will be more warmth in the sunlight, more warmth to make the well-kneaded dough of loyalty rise from 14 per cent to 20 or maybe 30 per cent.”
Fuck me.
Sorry.
I haven’t read the article, but, let me guess, it’s by Noel Whelan?
Actually it’s worse than that. It’s ‘THOMAS McCARTHY , the poet and longtime chronicler of the Soldiers of Destiny’
Ha! I saw that somewhere on the IT site yesterday and I thought it had to be a pisstake; obviously not!
Check it out CMK, theres at least two
very very dubious points made
Jesus that’s awful shite. Poet he says?
God that was painful. Lismore a ‘Redmonite town since 1641′, WTF does that mean?
Who is this guy? I won’t claim to be an expert on Irish poetry but I have a nodding acquaintance with it, and I’ve never heard of him.
But, yeah, shite of the highest order.
“Courageous” is worth following as a meme though. The sense in which Cowan uses it is very largely the sense in which it is most commonly used in contemporary political commentary.
One other thing: in the same week as Section 23 is kicked into the long grass, the minimum wage is cut.
