Gone, but not forgotten… Jerry Leiber August 28, 2011

Jerry Leiber, one part of legendary duo Leiber and Stoller, died this week.
Some great great songs in their songbook. It was covers such as these where I first encountered their music. These covers aside, which may not be to everyone’s taste[!], they wrote some fantastic stuff. If people know of other covers feel free to put them in comments…
Jailhouse Rock – ZZ Top
Love Potion #9 – Tygers of Pan Tang
Trouble – Gillan [an horrific and entirely unwarranted appearance of DLT at the start of that - apologies]
And something a little softer, this fine version of Ruby, Baby by Donald Fagen on 1982′s The Nightfly.

Away with your Gillan and your Tygers!
This:
‘A purple sash and a black moustache, in a honky- tonk down in Mexico’
Nice one.
Though I did want to get across the sense that my first serious listen of their music was through covers – of varying quality I will admit, though that Donald Fagen one is one of my favourite songs full stop. I love how he manages to find something almost eerie, obsessive and Blue Velvet like in the song… or at least so it seems to me… and yes Blue Velvet came out four years or so later.
