A great moment captured on film. Memories of those matches bring smiles and tears.

Footage of the penalty shootout that led to the celebrations:

I was working in a petrol station at the time and got the short straw of having to work until 5, so I was disgusted at having to watch the game in work……
The streets were empty, we had no customers while the game was on, a few drifted over at half time for smokes and chocolate. …. Luckily I got to see the extra time and penalties in the pub though!
Madness pure joyful madness.

Dreadful game though.

ejh, it wasn’t a time for objectivity.

And it has to be said that few if any of Ireland’s great, erm, triumphs were exactly based on the kind of game that enthralls neutrals. That Romania game hardly stands out as particularly poor when compared to some of our competitive outings!

Not that I cared in the slightest about the quality of the football, mind you.

Oh, for sure. My two English friends at the game were not as enthralled as some of the other attendees though.

Oh there’s no question the football was diabolical under Jack at the World Cup. The second worst WC match I ever saw (watching WC since 1990) was Ireland v Norway in ’94. The WORST by far and away was Ireland v Egypt in ’90. One team wouldn’t play and the other team couldn’t play!

The best WC game I ever saw Ireland play was against Spain where we lost so I suppose that tells you a lot about our basic football philosophy.

@neilcaff Fondly remembered glorious defeat against Spanish: it tells us a lot about our political philosphy too.
