Technnocrats and others… in Romania February 6, 2012

Tell me I’m not the only one to find the following statement from a Romanian political analyst, in the wake of the PDL centrist party PM Emil Boc’s resignation, a bit disturbing.
“It’s very likely that the next prime minister will be a technocrat, probably from the central bank or even someone from the central intelligence services ,” said political commentator Mircea Marian.
“Mr Boc’s resignation doesn’t mean there will necessarily be a domino effect. But the other ministers will have to make their own decisions on whether they will leave or hold out until the elections in the fall.”
A technocrat or even someone from the central intelligence services?
Note that the left leaning USL is on 50 per cent plus in polls.

BBC news has it as the director of the Intelligence services. Sinister.
The Securitate strikes back!
It’s funny how little we’ve heard about Romania. I really wonder is that’s because it doesn’t sit with normal Western media preconceptions as to what a story about the former Soviet bloc countries must be about (i.e. undemocratic Moscow-leaning leaders, or liberalising pro-Westerners). I mean maybe not, but you have to wonder.
The notion that technocrats are somehow non-political is spurious. When the Chicago boys first went to Pinochet’s Chile they too were described as technocrats.
Many have noted that the EU technocrats, -Draghi, Monti, Papademos-are all former employees of Goldman Sachs. But what’s more important is that this trio have all been trained in the U.S in neoclassical economic orthodoxy. Like that nice Mr.Chopra they are ideologues.
Rumania already has a technocrat/ideologue in charge of economic policy. His name is Jeffrey Franks of the IMF.
