If you’re not here, you’d do well to be here…

East Wall community hold important Book launch :

“Paradise Alley” is “Significant piece of Dublin Literature”

The East Wall History Group is delighted to be involved with this weeks launch of a reprint edition of John D. Sheridans “Paradise Alley”.

First published in 1945 , the novel tells the story of a national school teacher in a docklands school during the first half of the 20th century. While it is a work of fiction, the author had taught in East Wall Boys school , and many of the details- the school, it’s pupils and staff , the surrounding area and some events are based in reality. A new introduction puts some of these into their historical context , including details from the real school records , photos and memoirs from past pupils.

Appropriately, the launch on Tuesday evening takes place in St. Josephs co-ed school on the East Wall Road – a school has stood on this site since 1895 – John D Sheridan taught here 80 years ago and many of the fictional characters of “Paradise Alley” had their true life roots here.

The events of 1913 feature heavily in the first section of the book , which we believe is the first novel to include this.

Largely unavailable for almost half a century , this is a great opportunity to read what is a highly significant piece of Dublin Literature . All welcome to attend .

See attached press release from publisher regarding this weeks launch of “Paradise Alley” .

To be launched by Catriona Crowe ( National Archive of Ireland)
