Woody Guthrie July 14, 2012

It’s the centenary of Woody Guthrie today (and thanks to Tomboktu for reminding me). In an odd way I think that IELB’s piece on Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young elides with that. I always thought there was something, some hint of Guthrie in their output. But here’s a nice appreciation by Billy Bragg in the Guardian.
Here’s the man himself… This Land is Your Land… (which has interesting resonances here at this time in history).
And here’s Bragg and Wilco collaborating on the Mermaid Avenue Project, on the track Hoodoo Voodoo which is pretty fine (albeit in a strongly Wilco stylee, and am I wrong in thinking the two didn’t hit it off?).
And… She Came Along…

And the great Andy Irvine will join Billy Bragg for a “Woody 100″ concert in Dublin in September:

Sounds great. BTW, how are you, hope all is well, long time no see your name about?
Thanks for your thoughts, WorldbyStorm. I’m not bad, considering. Just not so inclined to take the world by storm…
At least I’m wiser about the Irish Greens, though I fear some others are not:

Ah, I don’t mean that you should listen to Eamon Ryan there. God no. Just noting how the German Greens haven’t realized that they might have better things to do.
Philip King has a Woody Guthrie special on his radio show tomorrow,Sunday at 9 on RTE Radio One,still a bit of public service broadcasting left in between the ads and the endless hours of largely professional sport.
Archive on $, on BBC Radio 4, marks the centenary

I agree with WBS on Guthries influence on CSNY though I would say it was mostly apparent in Niel Youngs work. You still cant beat the live version of Southern Man on 4 way street or Ohio for that matter.
