Bloody Friday TV Programme Tonight at 9 on BBC 1 July 19, 2012

21st July is the 40th anniversary of Bloody Friday, one of the worst days of the Troubles due to a huge series of car bombs detonated in different parts of Belfast in different times. To mark the occasion the BBC has a special documentary with a lot of testimony from people who were there on the day. Judging by the advert for it, it looks like a fascinating programme, and a reminder of what things were like in the worst year of the Troubles, and will doubtless be of interest to many people here.

Can we watch this on the BBC iplayer, if so how?

Garibaldy - July 19, 2012

It wouldn’t appear on iplayer until after it has been on tonight. I think it will be as the likes of this usually is. I would try this link to the programme mini-site tonight or tomorrow to see, as well as the iplayer itself.

Thanks comrade

My pleasure Mick. Some forms of digital TV also allow you to access the BBC channels from all the regions. If you have digital tv you might want to check it out.

Great suggestion, just checked it out and have set it to record.

I watched this and like most, I’m sure, felt nothing but sympathy and sadness for the innocent victims. I wonder why republicans chose not to appear. It did leave the programme unbalanced. Brendan Hughes, The Dark, in Voices…… admitted his key functional role in Bloody Friday but as he says he was not the OC and claims responsibility equally lies with Twomey, Adams and Bell. For what its worth The Dark stated ‘I have a fair deal of regret that Bloody Friday took place…..a great deal of regret…..As I say if I could do it over again I wouldn’t do it’. It is important that events like this in our history are confronted whether it makes us uncomfortable or not. There are many atrocities to confront in the Northern war, but we must do that. And for what its worth sectarianism hasn’t gone away you know as witnessed outside St Patricks on the Ormeau Road on the glorious…etc

I’d have thought that no-one from the provisionals at the time wanted to appear because they are ashamed of the whole thing, and it’s the sort of thing they’d rather bury than remember. I wonder though if the remarks of Joe Cahill on the day as he watched it on the tv (for those who missed it, he said that this was the way it had to be) aren’t more indicative of what people within the provisionals felt at the time. The murder of 9 civilians in Claudy only 10 days later (to which problems with warnings also contributed) is worth thinking about in that context.

Regarding sectarianism and the 12th, this picture of an orange hall a few days beforehand is worth bearing in mind as well. Sectarianism isn’t a one-way street.

Tierna Cunningham’s remarks are to be welcomed, but it’s not that long since people closer to home where doing exactly the same thing to this orange hall.

As I said comrade, sectarianism hasn’t gone away you know. But Tierna’s comments are welcome. We live in different times to 1972 in so many ways but sectarianism is still vibrant and assisted by the OO and the Black P. Ban the OO and other bigoted organisations that have an exclusive membership!!!!
