Just to Lower the Tone July 26, 2012

So, as noted by Eamonncork, one of the good things about CLR is its ability to stimulate discussion about interesting cultural matters, whether it’s Gramsci, music, or bits and pieces. However, just to lower the tone, while simultaneously demonstrating that we on the Irish left have our fingers on the pulse of popular culture, I offer this

Notice the similarities. I wonder if they’re related.

I’m not sure what it is you’re sooooo not ok with Croc.

Eamonn,

A tearful Rabbitte to finish that off would have been entertaining.

I’m quoting, G – I watched the whole thing. OMG, cheating on Rpatz. Totes ridick. Puts my problems in perspective.

I suspected that might be the case, but was wondering if you were suggesting I was exploiting the inane for cheap laughs. Perish the thought. I watched the whole thing as well but must have tuned some of it out as an unconscious self-defence mechanism.

Totes ridick indeed

‘Exploiting the inane for cheap laughs.’
Always in favour of that. As Dame Edna Everage puts it: ‘I was born with a priceless gift – the ability to laugh at the misfortunes of others.’

Speaking of Rabbitte.Doesn’t Brian Hayes sound really like him?Listening to the radio the other day and heard a person who sounded like Rabbitte but it was Hayes!Am I imagining things? It’s a kind of” middle class, smug,I can use big words to say nothing” accent.Always have a picture of Rabbitte drinking brandy late in the evening, smoking a cigar, looking up words in the dictionary, playing the violin a la Shelock Holmes, and talking to his mates(Gilmore,Howlin and De Rossa)about how he singlehandedly turned Ireland into a modern, progressive country

I can think of another candidate or two for playing the role you are ascribing to Rabbitte there.

gimmemore, howlin & de bossa may be a lot of things but mates with the bunny is definitely not one of them. The rabbite has no mates!

I recall listening to Morning Ireland a while ago thought it was Mary Lou when it turned out to be Lucinda, I thought afterwards that the content would have identified which one but it didn’t.

The four minutes of my life that I just lost watching that clip could otherwise have been spent e-mailing a load of Bureau of Military History statements from Belfast and Antrim veterans to interested parties. Oh well…
