BBC2 NI showed a a very interesting documentary on the eighteenth-century philosopher Francis Hutcheson on Wednesday night. It’s available for another few days on iplayer (or at the link above) for those within the UK should they wish to watch it. Hutcheson was born into a Presbyterian family in Ulster, and taught in Dublin before moving to Glasgow as Professor of Moral Philosophy. The show traced the origins and impact of his ideas in Ireland, Scotland and America. Among those interviewed was Fergus Whelan, familiar to many round these parts, not least as the author of Dissent into Treason and a regular contributor of historical articles to LookLeft. The show is well worth watching.
