I’m looking for a research assistant to look at US archives of anarchist, Fenian, trade union, freethinker etc. records from the late C19th – full details at http://www.publicjobs.ie/publicjobs/campaignAdvert/5712.htm.

U Dhammaloka? Never heard of him. Very odd indeed. But a fascinating job opportunity. Now if I was Generation X, and freed from some other ties… I’d be firing off my CV right now.

More details on the man at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/U_Dhammaloka. Featured at length in the Sindo in … 1911 but pretty much forgotten between then and 2009.

I want to cross post a link to a book on Mao Tse Tung,
‘Manufacturing History: Sex, Lies and Random House’s Memoirs of Mao’s Physician.’

More Spain

I see that Donegal County Council has disgraced itself by adopting the following pro-life motion:

“In keeping with the will of the Irish people as emphatically expressed in the 1983 referendum Donegal County Council opposes any form of legalisation of abortion in any circumstances”

The motion was passed by 17 votes to 1. The one vote against was from Thomas Pringle’s cooptee, John Campbell. Fair play to him for having both decency and a spine.

But hang on, doesn’t Donegal County Council have a bunch of Fine Gael members, supporters of a party which is allegedly going to legislate for X? Why, yes it does. One of them abstained, the rest voted for the motion.

Whatever about Fine Gael, surely Labour, Ireland’s very own useless liberal party, will have opposed the motion? Again, no they didn’t. Frank McBrearty said he couldn’t vote as chairman, but expressed his vehement opposition to abortion. The other Labour councillor either voted for it or didn’t show up.

And Sinn Fein? Well, they continued their proud tradition of trying to have things both ways and abstained. On a motion which opposed abortion in all circumstances. The fucking cowards.

Shit, I forgot to close the italics tag after the one sentence motion.

Tomboktu - August 4, 2012

Not quite. You forgot the slash in the HTML code to close the italics. But edited for you now.

Found this, thought I’d share.

Just in case this gets missed in all the hype.

I laughed.

eamonncork - August 5, 2012

Didn’t you realise that since the historic ground breaking visit of QE2 laughter isn’t an appropriate response anymore?
I didn’t laugh. I exulted.

Garibaldy - August 5, 2012

I might have exulted, but the fact it was a Chelsea player who was responsible for the sole missed penalty made it undeniably hilarious.

More evidence if it were needed that Stuart Pearse is utterly useless. I’d have sacked him and replaced him with David Beckham myself.

More Spain. Note: may include metaphorical content.

Tomboktu - August 6, 2012

“may” sound like you’re hedging your bets there.

ejh - August 6, 2012

It means that everything happened that way in reality, but you may take the events as having symbolic significance if you choose…

Worth noting the passing of Gore Vidal last week, at the peak of his form he was the finest book critic on the planet, an excellent novelist and a wonderfully acerbic political commentator. You can see the latter of these qualities in evidence on the first clip, and the apoplexy to which he often reduced the American right in the second one. RIP.

I watched that second clip a thousand times and I still always laugh at Vidals cheeky grin in response to ‘listen you queer’. A true troll. RIP.
