Neil Armstrong 1930 – 2012 August 27, 2012

Sad news and a good and modest man whose words on stepping onto the Moon were appropriately – well, broad in their vision and not restricted to a single nation. Hard not to feel that that period of space exploration is receding into history, SF writer Stephen Baxter has teased out the idea that very possibly at some point soon there will be no one alive who has walked on the surface of our nearest neighbour (spare a thought in particular for Aldrin and Collins in that regard – well not exactly Collins who remained in the Command Module, but also the others who followed them). I think that will – if it occurs, be a significant loss to humanity.

Here’s a piece written here in 2009 on the 30th anniversary of the Moon landing. There were a series of posts that month, just click on August 2009 in the right hand bar.

1. Paul Wilson - August 27, 2012

I remember that night in 1969 vividly, I was 14 and the streets in South London emptied as people returned home to see this on TV. One channel played the theme from ‘A Space Oddessy’ as the craft came in to land and the other channel( There were only 2 then I think) played the Bowie track. RIP.
