Socialist Party press conference in response to the resignation of Clare Daly TD 2nd September 2012.

Aaand topic done. Over. New week. Moving on. Sincerely: the left.
Hopefully so.
At least for the moment.
Another statement. This is farcical. Absolutely disastrous handling.
Just a slight overreaction there Julian…
I would like to discuss with you why I think it’s not an overreaction, but rather I intend on drafting a couple of lengthy documents, some press work and a press conference over a period of 4 days and communicating those to you through the very organizations I held public meetings on only a few weeks ago for being hostile to the left. I hope you get them.
So you don’t think the Socialist Party should express its positions on issues relating to the Socialist Party, that are being discussed elsewhere, leading to inaccurate and misleading information developing on an important and relevent subject, on its own website?
This second lengthy statement came out within 24 hours of a comprehensive 30 minute press conference. Not only that but it simply isn’t possible to respond to every squeek made. The Socialist Party of the Sisyphus Party?
The thing about cans of worms is once you open them, you cannot easily close them. The SP is effectively cracking open a whole case for the right to feast on.
Actually if the right want to drag an issue out they will, regardless. In fact saying nothing gives them more room to speculate and generally cause trouble. We won’t respond to every squeek, just the issues that are of concern at the present time.
F*cking hell. Please, make it stop.
With a bit of luck, that should be the end of exchanges about Clare’s reasons for resigning. The media will of course continue to try to stir things up.
However, unfortunately, some related issues are going to come up in the ULA and CAHWT, when in comes to, for instance, Clare’s support for Wallace’s involvement in anti-household charge campaigning.
And through the news papers is the best place to have those discussions? The ULA Council meets in 2 weeks ffs.
The Socialist Party have issued a statement outlining its views on Clare Daly’s participation in the ULA
http://www.socialistparty.net/component/content/article/3-newsflash/1034-statement-from-the-socialist-party-on-clare-dalys-involvement-in-the-ula
The statement says:
However there are important issues, including issues of principle, relating to Clare Daly’s political support for Mick Wallace that can’t be brushed under the carpet and need to be discussed inside the ULA.
Quite so. But perhaps the best place for that discussion would be inside the ULA, and not via a public slagging match of this kind.
Comrades, with these successive statements and a press conference, you’re really spoiling us! No, really.
I propose a public meeting on the issue of Clare Daly and the ULA. No, a seminar!
I’m setting up a summer school. Eoghan Harris is going to chair. He had some thing in UCC but now he is free for some reason.
Silly SP! Why are they dragging this issue out?
Unfortunately Clare Daly is dragging it out by her constinued support for Wallace – just like the issue had to be resolved within the SP, it will have to be resolved within the ULA if the ULA is to make progress.
They’re right to say that the issue should be resolved within the ULA, but I don’t see how releasing a press release helps in achieving that goal
If you want to discuss and resolve an issue within a group or organisation, the first thing you should do is avoid megaphone diplomacy through the press.
The issue is already out in the open – the SP is stating the obvious and is stating it because of the approach of Clare Daly who declared in the media that she was redesignating herself as a ULA TD – without discussing it with the ULA Steering Committee and without addressing the substantive issue that is causing the problem.
and Ireland’s right-wing press are going to do what exactly with all of this?
No. This is just personal at this stage. And the worse thing about it, that’s exactly how it comes across as well.
Some inaccurate comments were made in the media on this issue, so a statement was put on the Socialist Party website to clarify our position, in order to avoid further confusion. We have nothing further to say in the mass media and will not be not be doing interviews and the like.
“And this time, we mean it!”?
Inaccurate comments by the media?? You’re kidding! You should hold a meeting attacking the media attacks on the left..!
Or maybe you have done that and chosen to use the same media weeks later as the medium through which to conduct and prolong a hugely messy and damaging situation!
You say that as if it’s unusual for a political organisation to correct misunderstandings about its views on a particular subject, on its own website – where people go to find out those views.
That’s a relief – better late than never!
