I live in Spain now and I was shocked to discover that the majority party in the Cortes can sack Journalists from RTE the national TV and Radio station. The Rajoy Government some weeks ago organised the sacking of the Head of News and the News Anchor Anna Pastor. In the case of Pastor who has no known Political allegance but asks uncomfortable questions of Ministers, this is akin to Cameron organising the departure of Jeremy Paxman from the BBC.

What used to happen under PSOE is that the diresctor of RTVE, which might well change with a change of government, was appointed by consensus between the two major parties. PP broke with this and appointed a chap of no obvious talent, called Somoano, whose main previous experienc is with Telemadrid, the regional channel notoriously weighted towards the PP administraton and its grotesque leader, Esperanza Aguirre.

I may write a little on Somoano in the future, as his CV appears to suggest he possesses qualifications that I am not convinced he does….
