Interesting to see Leo selected as FG DoE for the Children’s rights referendum. Curious enough the Minister with that brief didn’t get the gig but more so that while the Oireachtas inquiries was Howlin and Shatter’s personal baby. The fiscal treaty and now this see a rebel taking on the responsibility.

Is it beyond Enda to be hedging a little bit here? While the treaty would have been rerun if we got it wrong. Kenny’s backroom would have taken some comfort in the political damage Coveney would have suffered. For Fine Gael, children’s rights will never carry the weight of European treaties but a failed referendum and ensuing blame game will still have implications for any prospective leader.

Alternatively, it could be that Varadkar is seen as a more effective campaigner, a more effective street fighter than the Minister for Children and Youth Affairs.

Or that Fitzgerald will be the Government DOE?

They’re appointing people on merit now?

I agree there may not as much to it but I think these these internal FG things should be looked at through the long shadow of June 10. Whether there is hedging or not I think the comfort the backroom would take in the rebel’s misfortune is still very real. Any bad result will weaken Enda and I don’t think it’s too far fetched he would make sure some of the prominent contenders are also in the firing line.
