1. Tomboktu - October 12, 2012

8: Labour?
10: Bad photograph — to my eye it could be Bobbly Molloy or Dessie O’Malley

2. ejh - October 12, 2012

For 9, is there a clue in the initials OFF?

irishelectionliterature - October 12, 2012

no, just that I think there were other unofficial sites.

3. Joe - October 12, 2012

3. How “recent” is “recently”?

irishelectionliterature - October 12, 2012

in the last 3 months

4. Daniel Sullivan - October 12, 2012

7 SKIA, is the South Kerry Independent Alliance (and no it’s not a cover for the Healy Raes)

5. combatliberalism - October 12, 2012

10: David Thornley?

6. Dr. X - October 12, 2012

1. That would be two candidates I think – Dr. Noel Browne, and a confederate whose name I don’t recall. These doughty stalwarts made up the massed ranks of the National Progressive Democrats, who had no connection to a later party of a similar name.

7. Jolly Red Giant - October 12, 2012

Q1. From what I can remember only 2 – Browne and John McQuillan

Q2. Christian Solidarity Party 8,357
Workers Party 7,808
Socialist Workers Party 2,028
Natural Law Party 1,515

Q3. John Dwyer in Wexford

Q4. Don’t know

Q5. Two
Roisin Shortall
Joan Burton

Q6. Tv deflectors

Q7. South Kerry Independent Alliance
Letterkenny Residents Party

Q8. Pretty sure it was the Labour Party

Q9. Don’t know – I hope it was something nasty

Q10. Dessie O’Malley

irishelectionliterature - October 12, 2012

Re Question 1…In Dail Elections they fielded more than John McQuillan and Noel Browne (who were both elected)

Jolly Red Giant - October 12, 2012

Took a bit of digging

Noel Hartnett stood for the NPD in a by-election in Dublin South Central in 1958 and got 2,688 votes.

irishelectionliterature - October 12, 2012

You’re nearly there …you’re still missing at least one.

Jolly Red Giant - October 12, 2012

Give me a break -

Possibly Peadar Cowan in DNE in 1961 ?

8. Jolly Red Giant - October 12, 2012

I know this is a bit off topic – but my 2 favourite table quiz questions of all time are -

1. Who is the only soccer player to have played in the World Cup Finals, UEFA Champions League, UEFA Cup, Intertoto Cup, all four levels of the English league football and the Football Conference?

2. Who is the only soccer player to play in all four divisions of the English League and play for his country in the one year?

LeftAtTheCross - October 12, 2012

It’s not Roy of The Rovers is it?

sonofstan - October 12, 2012

First one is Steve Finnan

Jolly Red Giant - October 12, 2012

Yes it is

And the second?

ejh - October 12, 2012

Calendar year, or season?

(Not that I know either way, mind.)

sonofstan - October 12, 2012

No idea – ‘one year’ presumably means calendar year rather than season? I thought of Teddy Sheringham, but that’s not it.

Blissett - October 12, 2012

Can anyone get the only (as far as I know) player to win Senior Inter County All Irelands, and Senior Club All Irelands in both codes?

Michael Carley - October 12, 2012

JBM.

Blissett - October 13, 2012

exactly that

eamonncork - October 13, 2012

Someone Welsh?

Tomboktu - October 13, 2012

On the sporting theme, which current TD was a professional footballer?

Joe - October 15, 2012

We’ll get back to this one Tombuk, once we’ve JRG’s cracker cracked.

Michael Carley - October 15, 2012

Association, rugby, or other?

Joe - October 15, 2012

Don’t know where this came from. But would it be Labour’s Derek Nolan in Galway West?

irishelectionliterature - October 15, 2012

Louth FG TD Peter Fitzpatrick?

9. sonofstan - October 13, 2012

Gis a clue JRG….

Jolly Red Giant - October 13, 2012

He’s Irish – and that should make it very easy

Michael Carley - October 13, 2012

It sounds like it might be George Best when he was on the slide.

Jolly Red Giant - October 13, 2012

much more recent

NollaigO - October 14, 2012

Is it Mark Kinsella (on a technicality)?

Jolly Red Giant - October 14, 2012

Nope

Joe - October 14, 2012

Jeebus JRG. All four divisions in England in the one year! Is he Northern Irish? How many different clubs did he play for in that one year? It has to be a calendar year, right, not a season? My head is still mush from being in the Aviva on Friday. Gary Breen’s name keeps jumping up???

Tomboktu - October 14, 2012

I assume he was loaned out that year.

irishelectionliterature - October 14, 2012

Graham Barrett?

RosencrantzisDead - October 14, 2012

Ray Houghton?

10. Joe - October 15, 2012

This came to me about 4am this morning. Fookin Krauts are disturbing my sleep. Keith Andrews – MK Dons and then Blackburn?

RosencrantzisDead - October 15, 2012

Right, I have had it with this. I’m phoning Jimmy Magee.

11. Jolly Red Giant - October 15, 2012

I’ll put ye out of yer misery

Stephen Kelly joined Southend United of League Two on loan from spurs on 31 Jan. 2003 and played 10 games.

He then joined QPR of League One on 27 Mar. 2003 and played 7 games

Kelly joined Watford of the Championship on loan on 24 Sept. 2003 and played 13 games

Kelly made his debut for Spurs in the Premier League on 29 Dec. 2003 against Charlton replacing the injured Stephen Carr.

He played for Ireland in the U-20 World Cup in UAE in 2003

All four divisions of the English League and played for his country in the same year.

Joe - October 15, 2012

Thanks JRG. My estimation of the SP can only go up when you come up with this kind of stuff. Now on to Tombukto’s neglected question: Which current TD was a professional footballer?

ejh - October 15, 2012

Blimey. It’s not even in his Wikipedia entry. I’m impressed.

12. eamonncork - October 15, 2012

Is 4 Derek Nally?

13. irishelectionliterature - October 15, 2012

Re the TD that was a professional footballer… is it Fine Gael Louth TD Peter Fitzpatrick?

Joe - October 15, 2012

Fitzpatrick was/is the manager of the Louth GAA football team. Which doesn’t rule out the possibility he once played professional football, but lessens it?

sonofstan - October 15, 2012

According to his webpage he played for Dundalk in the ’70s/ ’80s – unlikely to have been a professional though?

Jolly Red Giant - October 15, 2012

Could well be – Dundalk won the league in 1976, 79, 82

irishelectionliterature - October 15, 2012

The likes of Dermot Keeley and Eamon Gregg would have been playing for Dundalk at that time… doubt they were doing it for free!

eamonncork - October 15, 2012

I can’t remember him from those teams though and given the fact that this was the time of small squads, you could only bring on one sub and most clubs didn’t use much more than 15 or 16 in a season, he probably wasn’t a pro if he was outside the first team.
If the CLR has any Dundalk fans maybe they could enlighten us.

Tomboktu - October 15, 2012

is it Fine Gael Louth TD Peter Fitzpatrick?

Ah. That is not the TD I know about, but your answer-cum-question does suggest a potential problem: I don’t know if any other current TD was also a professional football player.

sonofstan - October 15, 2012

I’ve been reduced to ploughing through the members database and then wiki trying to find the one you have in mind and getting nowhere. Make it stop and tell us…….please.

irishelectionliterature - October 15, 2012

Its a current TD and not Brendan McGahon?
Its not Sean Kenny is it?

Tomboktu - October 15, 2012

You could go through over a 140 names and not come up with it.

irishelectionliterature - October 15, 2012

Catherine Byrne?

Tomboktu - October 15, 2012

Bingo! (I hope I haven’t stolen a question you planned to use in the future! :o )

irishelectionliterature - October 15, 2012

No but you’re more than welcome to add a few questions to this weeks or indeed any other of the quizzes :)
