7 SKIA, is the South Kerry Independent Alliance (and no it’s not a cover for the Healy Raes)
10: David Thornley?
1. That would be two candidates I think – Dr. Noel Browne, and a confederate whose name I don’t recall. These doughty stalwarts made up the massed ranks of the National Progressive Democrats, who had no connection to a later party of a similar name.

Re Question 1…In Dail Elections they fielded more than John McQuillan and Noel Browne (who were both elected)
Took a bit of digging
Noel Hartnett stood for the NPD in a by-election in Dublin South Central in 1958 and got 2,688 votes.
You’re nearly there …you’re still missing at least one.
Give me a break -
Possibly Peadar Cowan in DNE in 1961 ?
I know this is a bit off topic – but my 2 favourite table quiz questions of all time are -
1. Who is the only soccer player to have played in the World Cup Finals, UEFA Champions League, UEFA Cup, Intertoto Cup, all four levels of the English league football and the Football Conference?
2. Who is the only soccer player to play in all four divisions of the English League and play for his country in the one year?
It’s not Roy of The Rovers is it?
First one is Steve Finnan
Yes it is
And the second?
Calendar year, or season?
(Not that I know either way, mind.)
No idea – ‘one year’ presumably means calendar year rather than season? I thought of Teddy Sheringham, but that’s not it.
Can anyone get the only (as far as I know) player to win Senior Inter County All Irelands, and Senior Club All Irelands in both codes?
JBM.
exactly that
Someone Welsh?
On the sporting theme, which current TD was a professional footballer?
We’ll get back to this one Tombuk, once we’ve JRG’s cracker cracked.
Association, rugby, or other?
Don’t know where this came from. But would it be Labour’s Derek Nolan in Galway West?
Louth FG TD Peter Fitzpatrick?
Gis a clue JRG….
He’s Irish – and that should make it very easy
It sounds like it might be George Best when he was on the slide.
much more recent
Is it Mark Kinsella (on a technicality)?
Nope
Jeebus JRG. All four divisions in England in the one year! Is he Northern Irish? How many different clubs did he play for in that one year? It has to be a calendar year, right, not a season? My head is still mush from being in the Aviva on Friday. Gary Breen’s name keeps jumping up???
I assume he was loaned out that year.
Graham Barrett?
Ray Houghton?
This came to me about 4am this morning. Fookin Krauts are disturbing my sleep. Keith Andrews – MK Dons and then Blackburn?
Right, I have had it with this. I’m phoning Jimmy Magee.
I’ll put ye out of yer misery
Stephen Kelly joined Southend United of League Two on loan from spurs on 31 Jan. 2003 and played 10 games.
He then joined QPR of League One on 27 Mar. 2003 and played 7 games
Kelly joined Watford of the Championship on loan on 24 Sept. 2003 and played 13 games
Kelly made his debut for Spurs in the Premier League on 29 Dec. 2003 against Charlton replacing the injured Stephen Carr.
He played for Ireland in the U-20 World Cup in UAE in 2003
All four divisions of the English League and played for his country in the same year.
Thanks JRG. My estimation of the SP can only go up when you come up with this kind of stuff. Now on to Tombukto’s neglected question: Which current TD was a professional footballer?
Blimey. It’s not even in his Wikipedia entry. I’m impressed.
Is 4 Derek Nally?
Re the TD that was a professional footballer… is it Fine Gael Louth TD Peter Fitzpatrick?
Fitzpatrick was/is the manager of the Louth GAA football team. Which doesn’t rule out the possibility he once played professional football, but lessens it?
According to his webpage he played for Dundalk in the ’70s/ ’80s – unlikely to have been a professional though?
Could well be – Dundalk won the league in 1976, 79, 82
The likes of Dermot Keeley and Eamon Gregg would have been playing for Dundalk at that time… doubt they were doing it for free!
I can’t remember him from those teams though and given the fact that this was the time of small squads, you could only bring on one sub and most clubs didn’t use much more than 15 or 16 in a season, he probably wasn’t a pro if he was outside the first team.
If the CLR has any Dundalk fans maybe they could enlighten us.
“is it Fine Gael Louth TD Peter Fitzpatrick?”
Ah. That is not the TD I know about, but your answer-cum-question does suggest a potential problem: I don’t know if any other current TD was also a professional football player.
I’ve been reduced to ploughing through the members database and then wiki trying to find the one you have in mind and getting nowhere. Make it stop and tell us…….please.
Its a current TD and not Brendan McGahon?
Its not Sean Kenny is it?
You could go through over a 140 names and not come up with it.
Catherine Byrne?
Bingo! (I hope I haven’t stolen a question you planned to use in the future!
)
No but you’re more than welcome to add a few questions to this weeks or indeed any other of the quizzes
