I was discussing with a person who has family in Italy and they were saying that everything about south of Rome is reverting to poverty as cost of living rises, savings fall, and there is no job security, or just having low wages – even in engineering mangmt. level roles.
As I read your posts EJH I cant help get the sense of how spain is being Greekified, just as how italy is slowly starting to move towards spain albeit not the spain of late 2012, maybe Spain 2 years ago.
Recently I was reading how the boom some southern world states experienced as a result of supplying europe commodoties in WW1 and the bust that followed as it became apparent there was over-capacity caused stuff like the vietnames peasant rising in 31, and the rise of the indian national congress. All of which helped ensure that come WW1 the tinder was well prepared for decolonisation. 30 years to gestation. makes you wonder what course of events is being embedded in now by whats happening

Essentially that’s why I started writing. When Greece began to disintegrate I remember thinking that if I were living there, I’d think it important to record it as it happened. And then, not entirely to my surprise, I found that I was….

i have often wondered what it would have been like, and critically how people would have observed events and read them, would have been like to live through momentous moments in history like the revolutionary ireland 1912 onwarsds, Germany 1930 etc. Do these things just plod along with most of us not reacting until then they move so rapidly that we can no longer react in time. If so good reason to be active now trying to shape our future

Presumably the modern day equivalent of decolonisation would be the break up/collapse of the EU?
It might not take 30 years.
