November 1982 -The Workers Party and Israel – A request March 13, 2013

I got this request in my inbox this morning and am wondering if anyone can help. I don’t have that November 1982 Manifesto and none of their Election leaflets or material I have from that era mentions Israel. Had a look at The Left Archive too and there didn’t appear to be anything relevant either.
Anyone know any more on the background to the issue.

I am a researcher working from France (PhD candidate at Sorbonne)  and I would like to thank you for the most interesting website.

I’ve come upon the following statement in the book “The Lost Revolution” by Brian Hanley and Scott Millar : “The November election manifesto had included statements supporting the Solidarity trade union in Poland and arguing for recognition of the state of Israel. Both positions ran counter to party policy. The controversial material had been written in the main by Eoghan Harris and Oliver Donohue, who were concerned that the party’s vocal opposition to Solidarity could lose them votes. ”

They were talking about the 1982 manifesto of Sinn Féin the Workers Party. I’d be extremely interested in reading the part about Israel, as this is the focus of my research. Would you happen to have it?

Thank you very much for your help!

Fascinating. Were they drummed out of the Party for that ?

No, they drummed away for several years after that.

As soon as I saw ‘support’ and ‘Isreal’ I knew Harris would have been involved.
