Sunday Independent Stupid Statement of the Week August 11, 2013Posted by Garibaldy in Sunday Independent Stupid Statement of the Week.
The editorial is the clear winner this week. After a rousing defence of the right to strike, we get this.
The bus workers and the rest of their public sector colleagues would be wise to learn two fundamental lessons from this affair. Whatever about the private sector; for public sector workers, 2013 is in terms of pay and conditions somewhat better to that of 1913. The bus workers, in fairness, when it comes to the endemic Irish vice of irresponsible self-pity, have plenty of bad company amongst the ever bountiful ranks of public sector fiscal ‘Impossibilists’. Our teaching unions, ESB workers, hospital consultants and third-level lecturers also outwardly believe that uniquely, amidst all of the nations of the free world, even as Ireland struggles to escape from the disgrace of national bankruptcy, we can continue to sponsor the best paid public sector workers in Europe.
In that regard Mr Varadkar’s clear warning that the taxpayer can no longer pay for such economic follies should echo across the many government departments which keep the vast files and columns of our dysfunctional semi-state companies under such a loose rein. The Government, and Fianna Fail in particular, would do even better to consider the benefits that will accrue to Mr Varadkar and Labour too for having stood up to the bus workers.
Things are better than in 1913, so be grateful for cuts to your conditions. Sure.
