This Weekend I’ll Mostly Be Listening to… Steve Earle September 7, 2013Posted by irishelectionliterature in This Weekend I'll Mostly Be Listening to....
Whilst searching through a box of old leaflets in the attic I found a ticket for Steve Earle and the Dukes in the National Stadium from the late 80′s. Earle was touring the Copperhead Road album which was one of the soundtracks to my student years. That tour would spawn the live album ‘Shut up and die like an aviator’.
Aside from singing Earle has written a number of books (I read the one of short stories which was OK) , acted in The Wire and has a fairly big part in Treme (some of his songs were also used in both and his version of “Way Down in the Hole” was used for the fifth season of The Wire.)
I’ve seen him live countless times and his shows are always excellent. Various guest appearances have led me to artists such as Emmy Lou Harris and Buddy Miller as well as others such as The Del McCroury Band. He’s had a fairly eventful life with battles against drugs and drink, spent time in prison and had countless divorces.
Politically he’s fairly outspoken and many of his songs would have political messages be they ones against The Death Penalty , Big Corporations and so on. I may be wrong but I think he spent a while living in Ireland too.
Theres a good piece on him here
It was the tour that became
