How quickly we forget… October 4, 2013Posted by WorldbyStorm in Irish Politics.
… reading the news about Peter Mathews resignation from Fine Gael a couple of thoughts struck me. Firstly he had little or no chance under the FG banner. Even as an Independent he has little or no chance. And in truth he’s operated as a political sole trader for quite some time now. Whether this is meant to cause some wobble in the last hours before the referendum is an interesting question, but it seems unlikely to have any impact at all. How his resignation works with the rest of the ‘Reform Alliance’ remains to be seen. I can’t imagine that this is really to their advantage if the object of the exercise is to return to FG at some point in the future.
But one other thought. Once upon a time a certain George Lee was a Fine Gael TD in the same constituency. Back then Enda Kenny’s judgement wasn’t considered to be that sound. Now of course matters are different, not least because he is Taoiseach. But losing one TD in that constituency seems like bad luck. Two though in the space of a relatively few years?
