I hadn’t heard about the Kevin Heatley murder in a while.
Worth reading about for anyone who doesn’t know about it. And a harrowing corrective to the narrative which sees the war in the North solely in terms of the forces of law and order holding the line against Provo terror. Which would be a large section of the political establishment here.

Curiously the Wikipedia page on the subject appears to have been deleted within the last week.

A horrible case which gives the lie, as do many others, to the idea (promoted with the benefit of hindsight) that what went on in the North was a simple policing campaign. The Annette McGavigan murder is another.
I’ve always marvelled at the ability of certain British commentators to be horrified at the behaviour of US troops on the ground in Iraq and Afghanistan and imply that British troops are relatively immune to this kind of thing. I’m also aware that the majority of British people, certainly when I lived there, would never have condoned the killings of civilians in the North.
Though I wonder if that’s changed a bit given the heavy promotion of US style ‘backing our boys’ campaigns in recent years.
