President McAleese, the Criminal Justice Bill and that missing forty minutes… July 27, 2009

President Mary McAleese has this morning signed the Defamation Bill 2006 and the Criminal Justice (Amendment) Bill 2009 into law.
Last night, the President met 19 of the 22 members of the Council of State for nearly three hours to discuss whether to refer two Bills to the Supreme Court. The meeting began shortly after 6pm and broke up shortly before 10pm.
Nearly three hours?
I’m not saying they can’t count at the Irish Times… ah, wait, perhaps I am…
The Cedar Lounge Revolution 
One would wonder what was the input from Albert Reynolds, the man who was excused from testifying to the Mahon Tribunal a mere 12 months ago on the medical grounds that he was suffering from “serious cognitive impairment”. Not to mention the disgraced ex-Taoiseach Bertie Ahern who didn’t have a bank account despite massive amounts of cash, in various denominations, passing through his hands.
