This weekend I’ll mostly be listening to… Crime and the City Solution September 19, 2009

Now here is a band, with links to the Birthday Party, through former members and an aesthetic that was not entirely different to that of a certain N. Cave. I’m not really one of those that worships at the altar of the latter, I’ve always found moments on From Her To Eternity (particularly the title track) and even better the near peerless Your Funeral… My Trial (fabulous stuff, particularly Hard On for Love – I kid you not) and then later The Good Son and been quite content with them. I get the crooner schtick, but it doesn’t move me overly much.

Crime and the City Solution though have much of that ‘crooner’ style but somehow don’t grate with it. This is no doubt a personal thing on my part (for all you infuriated N. Cave fans out there). Anyhow, led by Australian Simon Bonney they released a number of albums across the 1980s before calling it a day in 1990.

My favourite album of theirs was Paradise Discotheque which has a fabulous song cycle on The Last Dictator. Sadly there’s no version of that up on YouTube so you must make do with the somewhat less exalted tracks here and an additional one from the earlier Bride Ship.

But even if less exalted there’s a certain something to the tracks and to Bonney’s voice. Well worth investigating further if you’re of a mind.

It’s twenty years since I saw it, but they were brilliant in ‘Wings of Desire’. Great videos.

That’s very true. I’d forgotten that entirely.
