Sunday Independent Stupid Statement of the Week February 28, 2010

John Drennan’s description of Aer Lingus is certainly worthy of a place in the top three.
And while Mary Coughlan must go, it is difficult to see how replacing her with some beardless youth will allow us to take on vicious interest groups such as the Dublin Airport Authority and Aer Lingus.
In second place, Marc Coleman’s description of last December’s budget will doubtless shock many public sector workers
That Budget hurt like hell and many are hopping mad over it. But it hurt across the board and the man who implemented it, who himself is battling with cancer, is seen as doing right by the country, and as turning things around.
In first place, Brendan O’Connor, who reminds us that the political system in the Republic is flawed. We can all agree there. His answer though is simply baffling in the midst of a crisis created by the most fundamental flaws in the neo-liberal version of capitalism.
Fortunately for our politicians, there is a whole other culture in this country that operates very differently to politics and that is primed and geared to deal with the rapidly changing world we live in. It is a culture that moves fast, that thinks laterally, that takes risks, that has imagination and bravery and vision. It deals with catastrophe — and the prospect of becoming obsolete — all the time. In fact, in exactly the same way that the culture of politics seems specifically designed not to deal with the reality we face right now, the culture of enterprise in this country is designed to suit current reality to a tee.
Not part of stupid statement of the week, but worth reading Willie O’Dea’s column, where he reflects on his resignation.
Are we still viewing Aer Lingus as the Robin Hood, set against the Ryanair Sheriff of Nottingham?
Despite the plan B threat of 1,100 redundancies if the workers don\’t accept the deep cuts on the table?

Are you arguing that Aer Lingus is a ‘vicious interest group’… more so than RyanAir?

In the way they sacrificed those SRT jobs for there own self-interest? First they offshored AL maintainence work to France. Then they did there upmost to stop the replacement jobs happening. Yes, that was vicious.

More so though?

Wouldn’t catch Ryanair doing that; no sirree.

I’m always minded when hearing about ‘the culture of enterprise in this country’ of this piece by Michael Taft…

When I knew John Drennan many years ago, he was 25 but looked 40.
But I digress. Does anyone actually read this Sindo stuff? There was a time when I’d often be in Busaras on a sunday and there’d always be a pile of complimentary, and unread, Sindoes in a corner somewhere. . .

what are the circulation figures like? i thought they were pretty high unfortunately.
Although comp copies inflate that of course…

And even if they do sell a lot, are people actually reading the Bloviators, though?

Ireland’s entrepreneurs in action:
“That meeting provides a window onto the nexus of a golden circle of bankers, builders and politicians once lionised as fearless wealth creators and now pilloried for the savageness of the Irish recession.”

That’s weird… A commercial site, or so it seems, in Russian, lifts two sentences from a previous comment and reiterates them. Interesting.

The ‘Susan K.’ comment… it’s an odd one.

Is it selling page designs?

I clicked on the link over her name and I got a virus warning. Seems like one of those automatic sentence generating thingys.

Its not copy and paste, al/AL but both spell ” their ” wrong. also the feminine interest connection . and not forgetting upmost. I think you caught a double poster.Someone with an obsession.

Both Susan K and Dimeshislibre are spam. The comments are computer-generated and then sent out in their millions from servers in Russia / Ukraine. Their apparent logical linguistic structure belies their software origins.

Susan K has a link to a website, and it would appear from your reply to comment #5 that you get a virus if you click the link. But what does Dimeshislibre do? It had no link.

Maby Susan K should be removed ,seems like some kind of sabotage accidental or not.

dodgy software. The generators don’t always work, but one of the sites where part of Dimeshislibre’s message shows up is one for “busty anime whores fucked by monster” so take it from there I suppose.

I think it does no harm to understand that Brendan O’Connor started life as a comedian and playing funny man is now, ironically, a full time job for him. He no doubt wishes to be taken seriously, but The Sunday Independent isn’t the paper for that. Like Eoghan Harris, he can sometimes, in fact quite often, be funny without his intending to be so. Like the late, great, Tommy Cooper – but without his talent – just seeing their image is often enough to make one laugh.

It’s hard to select from such a rich seam of candidates, but I believe one remark in particular by Brendan O’Connor may have been unjustly overlooked, as I outline in more detail here.

on the software point I noted that a comment on another site had just taken the first line of my post and then duplicated it. Indeed there was a link on the name, although no virus behind it.AN interesting new phenomenon.
back on topic I’d like to mention Bill Cullen in dispatches. His job on Michael o”leary was just a beauty. Is someone interested in being a Fianna Fail candidate?

Was the Eoghan Harris column not worth a mention? Retrospective support for the ‘Heavy Gang’?

In reference to Harris: the Shin Beth is Israeli internal security, Mossad external affairs and neither were modeled on anything to do with Michael Collins.

yes good points. I thing he would have been a good candidate. Justifying torture and assassinations when it suits him… great.

Yes, indeed. It was a Shin Bet ‘advisor’ who was present at the murders of two Irish soldiers in the Lebanon in the Eighties (and the attempted murder of the third, who got away and identified their killers).
