[…] the presidential campaign of Senator David Norris has come to something of an ignoble end. From the Irish Times: ‘Mr Norris held a press conference outside his home in Dublin this […]
Watching Finian McGrath on Vincent Browne, I couldn’t help but find his chuckling and smirking about how he and his buddies already have someone else lined up a bit galling. Perhaps my judgement is a bit coloured because of his role in deciding that the electorate aren’t intelligent enough to make their own minds up about David Norris’ presidency, but his attitude seemed remarkably callous for someone who, in the same program, called Norris a friend and respected colleague. With friends like that….
McGrath clearly sees himself as some sort of kingmaker, and is visibly enjoying his new-found importance. To have names drawn up already (as he strongly hinted) would suggest he, Halligan, Pringle, and maybe others, have had a plan B for some time. Who knows, maybe they’ll come up with an inspired choice and surprise me, but I very much suspect they’ll parachute in some TV personality/celebrity candidate with very little substance and none of the experience Norris could have offered.
(…meant to add…) Senator John Crown, by contrast, came off very well in my estimation on the same program, as someone who never actually supported Norris, but was prepared even today to let the voters decide for themselves for the sake of representative democracy. He also promised to introduce legislation to prevent TDs and Senators from involving themselves in legal cases – something long overdue and that really shouldn’t have to be spelled out to any elected official in the first place (Norris included). He also, in contrast, seemed genuinely saddened by Norris’ departure.

Poor man. I really feel sorry for him though to be honest there was no other way.
Too much to hope that Mitchell and the proxy-FF candidate will get the same treatment?
