Labour councillors urged by Sinn Féin to vote against waste service privatisation on Monday

LABOUR PARTY members of Dublin City Council have been urged by their Sinn Féin colleagues to join them on Monday in voting down a proposal to privatise the capital’s waste collection service.

The privatisation of the public service is being proposed by the City Manager but Sinn Féin and some other councillors are opposing the move.

Sinn Féin Council Group Leader Larry O’Toole said that once the waste service is privatised it’s almost certain there will be no way back into public control.

He said:

“If waste collection is privatised then people will be at the mercy of commercial companies whose priority is profit rather than a good service for the public.

“Bin charges will just rise and rise.”

Councillor O’Toole added:

“This is an issue of protecting public services and Labour councillors – indeed all the councillors – need to stand up at the Dublin City Council meeting on Monday and vote against privatisation.”

The refuse service in Cork City was recently privatised by the City Manager without any vote or indeed reference to the elected councillors. I would be surprised if the same doesn’t happen in Dublin.

Brendan Ogle speaking on this very topic:

Interesting watch, odd mix of sense and nonsense.

He lays into the Labour Party and union collaboration with the right, then gently chastises his own members for their privilege and lack of fight.

He seems instinctively put off by their big houses, kids going to private school, two cars in the drive and an apartment in Bulgaria.

Yet he also thinks this privilege is worth fighting for, maybe to inspire the rest of the workforce as to what they could achieve if only they got their heads around the concept of rent seeking.

Well, not really this very topic.

More related via privatization in general (the ESB being the obvious jewel in the crown, and his particular interest).

I know that this is off topic, but. I have been told by a researcher for a polling company that David Norris is about to re-enter the presidenrial campaign next week! I do hope it is true, love the idea of setting the cat among the pigeons.

There’s a public meeting on the water tax or air tax or whatever the hell tax they’re calling it.

This Saturday in the Tecaher’s Club at half 1.

There’s a nasty looking poster here for it – http://www.socialistparty.net/images/stories/cathwt.jpg
