This Weekend I’ll Mostly Be Listening to… Andy White November 5, 2011

It was the recent Presidential campaign and the focus on the past of Martin McGuinness that got me rummaging out the old Andy White LPs, CDs and Cassettes. Yet again “The Troubles” were centre stage in Irish Political debate. (Andy Whites Website which has more of his music)
I thought of my weekend trips to Belfast and Portrush in the late 80s and early 90s and the what the whole experience was like to a Dubliner with little or no experience of the North. One trip involved doing a course and becoming qualified in ‘Conflict Resolution’.
Walking through parts of Belfast being told to stop talking in case my accent was recognised, an encounter with a group of baying Unionists and feeling rather afraid were all well outside my previous experiences… and yet it was barely a glimpse of life there.
A few years earlier I had got to like Belfast Singer Songwriter (and sometime poet) Andy White. He first came to my attention with his “Kiss The Big Stone” album and the single ‘Religious Persuasion’ (On 12″ Vinyl somewhere in my attic). Much of his music of that period had a political tinge.
An example being the opening verse of Religious Persuasion

‘Protestant or Catholic’
cried a voice from the crowd
‘not you again st peter’
I was thinking aloud
should have packed my bags
headed off for the coast
had my time already come
to meet the heavenly host?

I kept thinking of that song when we were amazed as the one Protestant amongst our group of 12 or so was identified by our hosts. I apparently was one of the most Catholic looking.
My third or fourth time seeing White was in 1990 supporting Billy Bragg the night after Margaret Thatcher quit which was brilliant. Have been to see him in all sorts of places from Whelans, Mother Redcaps to the National Concert Hall. I have great memories of him in Whelans (after the power went due to playing over his time ) playing an encore with just his acoustic guitar sitting on the edge of the stage.
He’s lived in amongst other places Dublin, Switzerland and is currently living in Australia.
Aside from his own solo albums his musical ventures have included ‘ALT’ with Tim Finn and Liam O’Maonlai and he has just released an album with Canadian Stephen Fearing. (The Fearing and White Website)

There is a good review of his excellent book 21st Century Troubadour here

I tried, without success, uploading some other Andy White songs to youtube so this selection is missing some of my favourites such as “A Million Miles” , “James Joyces Grave” … and many more 🙂
