trackback

There’s been TWIBMLTs done previously about bands from the Paisley Underground to date (Green on Red , The Long Ryders ) and today its another one in the recently reformed Mazzy Star (they play the Forbidden Fruit Festival in June).
The mainstays of Mazzy Star are the delicately beautiful voiced Hope Sandoval and David Roback.
Roback is full of Paisley Underground associations having been a former member , along with his brother Steven, of Rain Parade , played with former Dream Syndicate bassist Kendra Smith in Clay Allison and then Opal. When Smith left Opal she was replaced by Sandoval and the band reformed as Mazzy Star.
Mazzy Star issued three mesmeric albums between 1990 and 1996, with a new one reported on the way. Funnily enough despite being a fan of other Paisley Underground bands it was from looking for something like the first album by Mojave 3 that I ended up buying the 3 Mazzy Star Albums. I’m glad I did….

Great band, though I have to be honest Ghost on the Highway is perhaps my favourite of theirs, a song which I do’nt think Sandoval co-wrote.

There’s a great review which complements your own assessment above IELB of her band at Vicar Street over on Dublin Opinion from the year before last. http://dublinopinion.com/2010/05/10/hope-sandoval-the-warm-inventions-suzanne-whelans-dublin-7th-may-2010/
