As its Easter this from JM Plunkett during the Lockout discussing democracy and ‘all other theories of government’ which ‘assume as axiomatic the proposition that only those possessing power know how it should be used’. he continues ‘There is always , moreover, the double assumption that those who know how power should be used will thus employ it and that those who do not know could not be trusted to find out’. Plunkett was argunig that ‘the sole objects of government should be the peace and prosperity in the fullest sense of all the individuals composing the nation’. Thought this an interesting quote from the youngest signatory and as Connolly referred to him the bravest of all the leaders of 1916.

Happy Easter!

How did you do in the election?

May 3rd. We expect a swing to Labour. But TUSC standing in a number of places and it will be interesting how their candidates do against ours on the ground. Also expect swing to the Greens in some inner city areas. Lib Dems finished we think in places like Liverpool which they controled in the past. They can’t get enough people to run or canvass for them. But there is anger out there and rightly so.

London mayoral on the same day and it will be a set back for the Eds if Boris holds on, but as we’ve seen Ken not so squeaky clean on the tax issue.

Will post result when over and thanks for asking!

Sorry, shows how much attention I’ve been paying! I thought your election was around the same time as the bye-election Galloway won. I’d be a TUSC supporter, but best of luck as a Labour left should be an ally of TUSC. I’m surprised to hear there is still a Militant going, or was I mis-interpreting your previous update on the election? Glad to here the Lib-Dems are f**ked; I hope the lid of the dustbin of history has been raised for them…. Again, best of luck!

Yeah the IMT exist, the Ted Grant wing of the Militant split organised under Socialist Appeal. Their paper still carries the old Militant logo. Two members running in Pboro for Labour. Both should get in although in one of the wards a WRP rump group are running a candidate belonging to the Socialist World Movement. The other side of the Militant split are now the SP. Running under the TUSC banner. Whither the Left in Britain?

Militant is still going. It changed its name to Militant Labour and then to the Socialist Party.

There is a little splinter group called Socialist Appeal which is still inside the Labour Party, although as I understand it they don’t actually carry out much work inside the Labour Party structures any more, as there would be little purpose to doing so. They do however maintain membership cards and occasionally look to stand in a council election or two. They are, as far as I can tell, the very last of the entryists as I think that every other socialist group has now left or disbanded.
