…. heard of a South Dublin School where after the standard graduation mass the boys were each presented with silver rings with the name of the school engraved on the outside.
The old school tie being replaced with a ring?

Going to my daughter’s graduation from school tonight. It’s certainly a big deal these days. Don’t remember any of that shit when I left O’Connells in the seventies! I’m in two minds about the whole thing. All that sentimental, gonna miss you so much, we all love and respect each other, pupils and teachers … would there be a market here for School Graduation Sick Bags like the Royal Wedding Sick Bags that did so well across the water last time out? PS Don’t tell my daughter I posted this.

There certainly seems to be some resistance to it from some students, going by all the stories in the IT every late May of the “departing 6 th year students go on rampage” variety.

It’s very Merkan. Do you have school “proms” as well, with students going off in huge stretched limos? That arrived in Ingerland some years ago. Harmless, but for some reason I don’t like it. Grumpy old man.

Yep. We call them debs or debs dances here. Debs short for debutantes. But they’ve been around quite a while. I didn’t go to mine back in 1977. A feature I have to look forward to in September is when all the neighbours and friends are invited round to view my daughter and her dress and her companion before they head out and do what debs do. The more I think of it the more I think there’d definitely be a market for Graduation and Debs Sick Bags. I’m gonna be an entrepreneur!

yeah, we had our debs in 82. No stretch limos though. Buses too and from the Sands Hotel. A fairly soulless event.

I left school with a blackeye…………a parting present from a viscious christian brother in Limerick………..that was in the 60s………..I was 13

I’m a ’60s graduate as well and all I got was an undying hatred of privilege, the Catholic Church, Fianna Fail, Fine Gael, IBEC, the Establishment, so I reckon I had a good education.
