It was through seeing and listening to Steve Earle (another forthcoming TWIBMLT subject) that I first came to appreciate Emmylou Harris. Previously to me she had been a Country music fogey yet I always liked music with a country tinge. She did a few duets with Earle and also performed with him a few times. The ‘Spyboy’ guitarist Buddy Miller played with Steve Earle in the late 90s and I loved his guitar style. It was the fact that Miller was the guitarist for Emmylou Harris on her live album ‘Spyboy’ that prompted me to buy it. What an album that is and the albums from ‘Wrecking Ball’ to ‘Stumble into Grace’ via ‘Red Dirt Girl’ are my favourites from Emmylou Harris.
For ‘Wrecking Ball’ Daniel Lanois produced it and it was fantastic, ‘Where will I be’ from the selection below is probably the highlight.
‘Wrecking Ball’ and the following live album ‘Spyboy’ introduced her to a whole new audience away from the Country sphere. Her career spans forty years and she has collaborated with lots of well known musicians from Country Stalwarts such as Dolly Parton to the likes of Neil Young and even our own Mary Black. Theres a list of her musical Friends here on the wonderful emmylou.net site.
A joy to listen to, a joy to see live too.
