Who knows why? Perhaps because this massive bust of Marx is the best known landmark of the city of Chemnitz, or perhaps because they were wanted to make a satirical point about the capitalism and commodity fetishism.

Chemnitz was renamed Karl-Marx-Stadt from 1953 to 1990 during the GDR period.
