Chemnitz was renamed Karl-Marx-Stadt from 1953 to 1990 during the GDR period.

Ah lads lads lads – get your story right.

There was an internet vote for customers of the Chemnitz Sparrkasse – a kind of local Savings Bank and they chose this image.

Who knows why? Perhaps because this massive bust of Marx is the best known landmark of the city of Chemnitz, or perhaps because they were wanted to make a satirical point about the capitalism and commodity fetishism.
