You should really include some kind of warning with this like, “There may be no football on tonight so you can watch this, but it’s really, really, really grim. No seriously. Really grim. I don’t think you quite get it….GRIM.”

By strange co-incidence I only watched the original film (probably the pilot above) last week. Great stuff indeed. I only had vague memories of it. It was originally shown as part of this – http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Play_for_Today – which seems to have had tons of good films (some of which are still not widely available). I don’t think anything like it would be made today.

Yosser is a particularly interesting character – especially the way in which his contempt for/anger at his boss/life translates into both workplace militancy and would be entrepreneurship, does this reflect the mood of many at the time and something Thatcherism tapped into?

Also the scene with the hitcher is uncomfortably brilliant.
