Sunday Independent Stupid Statement of the Week July 29, 2012

Slim pickings today, not from an outbreak of sense but rather because a lot of the paper isn’t online yet. I was pleased to see the Sindo covering the low level of tax paid by the richest. But then again, this is the Sindo, and so Louise McBride offers us this

Many of Ireland’s mega rich do have to pay big tax bills — but many more have shipped big losses from the bust which they can offset against gains.

So that’s alright then.

Jody Corcoran did make me laugh.

Those two idealogues in Government, Leo Varadkar and Pat Rabbitte, last week chose that Official Ireland love-in, the MacGill Summer School, to sound off on the future of the media in a debate entitled ‘The Media and Democracy’.

The idea Rabbitte is an ideologue is amusing. The idea that Varadkar is the only right-wing ideologue in the government is much less so.

Eoghan Harris, in the last section of what can be loosely referred to as a column, defends his failure to resign given that Denis O’Brien has taken over the paper -Harris proclaimed that he would resign if O’Brien ever took over. Harris is annoyed that the Phoenix keep referring to this thing that he actually said.

Harris first argues that O’Brien does not own INM and cites a ruling by the BAI which states that O’Brien does not own INM. He then claims that O’Brien has not changed the paper and has not had an impact on the content (He could only improve it). Lastly, he claims that ‘he chose his words carefully’ in that rather than resign he was referring to the issue that he might be fired.

Brilliant.

So are we to take it that O’Brien doesn’t think he’s worth firing?
