The sound quality only adds to the nostalgia as it reminds me of trying to tune him in on the radio under the blankets in Sligo. But it wasn’t a problem then and it’s not a problem now. Thanks IEL.

Remember people spending years perfecting their stop/start so they only ever taped music and the upset in 04 when we realised no one had recorded John himself.

Just looking at the list here and sadly no sign of the 1994 Peelenium and the only audio Im aware of the mythical ‘Arkines Lost. Rarest of jungle

On a slightly related matter, watched this legendary Aussie post-punk film, starring Michael Hutchence, the other night. Often amateurish, sometimes cliched but kind of irresistible on account of its energy and honesty, anyone who’d be into these old Peel shows would enjoy it.

Reminded of two other great, and largely forgotten, youth sub culture movies, both by female directors who went on to become big time Hollywood players, Penelope Spheeris and Kathryn Bigelow.


Saw this as well recently. Remember it being much referenced when I was a kid. A look at the state of music in 1981 which takes a complete wrong turn by concentrating on what Jon Savage called the ‘social realist’ side of punk, Sham 69, Cockney Rejects et al who would kind of lose the historical argument. But some good Stiff Little Fingers footage and some evocative stuff from the London of the time. Above all it’s always nice to see a documentary which isn’t afflicted by hindsight.

My band recorded a peel session in 1996. While it remains one of the things I am most proud of in my life, I’m delighted to say it’s not included in one of these 458 shows. It hasn’t aged well.

It’s a metaphor for the fleeting and evanescent nature of human happiness I’m sure many of the bands involved would have appreciated..

I got to listen to about 4 of them before they were taken off on Wednesday evening. It never occurred to me to download them. Listening in the early to mid-’80s I heard bands like Benny Profane and AC Temple whom I’d completely forgotten about. The other thing I hadn’t remembered was the amount of excellent country, blues and r’n’b Peel played, which seems to have decreased as he got more into hip hop and house, if you listen to a show from the late ’80s-’90s. It’s all still supposed to be on google cache but it wouldn’t work for me this morning…
