On the recent thread on The Left and Elections in Rural Ireland 1973 to present there were some comments prompted by the CPI-ML candidacy in the 1973 Monaghan By-Election. This is a newspaper clip from the time, where candidates were given space in the local paper for a few words.

I’d love to see the reaction out here in rural north Meath, not too far from Monaghan and almost four decades later, if I posted a notice on the board in the community centre calling for “all progressive peole to take up the study of Marxism, Leninism and Mao Tse Tung thought and build revolutionary study groups to propagate scientific ideas and oppose national chauvanist and revisionist ideas in order to raise the level of the workign class etc. etc.” I strongly suspect I would receive a visit from the local community health nurse enquiring about whether I was “suffering from my nerves”.

I remember my father telling me about a party political broadcast by Vipond during the by-election which was along the same lines. He had a picture of people all over the country switching on and thinking there’d just been a revolution.

The best part of it is the completely serious tone of the newspaper report, as if there was nothing unremarkable about Vipond’s statements. I’d have expected an Irish paper in the period to have blown a gasket entirely.
