My friend got the Spiritualized 12 inch single “Feel So Sad” , we listening to it and it was so very different to a lot of the music we were listening to at the time, it was brilliant. They played “The Rock Garden” in Dublin and we went along and again were mezmerized by them. Their first album ‘Lazer Guided Melodies’ came out and again it was excellent with “Take Your Time”, “Shine a Light” and “You Know It’s True” being particular highlights.
Spiritualized comprise of Jason Pierce and a a host of other musicians, Pierce was part of Spacemen 3, hence the connection. Initially unaware of the Spacemen 3 link , I ended up buying a couple of Spacemen 3 albums and again they were excellent. Over time some Spacemen 3 songs were reworked and re released by Spiritualized, “Lord Can You Hear Me” below is one of a number of tracks recorded by both bands. I’ve also included both the Spacemen 3 and Spirtualized versions of “Feel So Sad”. Though its an awful feeling getting into a band that you know had only split a few years previously.
The best known album from Spiritualized is probably their 1997 (15 years ago! seems like far less) offering “Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating in Space”. That album won all sorts of accolades and sold well. I’ve a ‘Live at the Albert Hall’ album too which plays most of “Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating in Space” and is wonderful.
Thye have released a number of albums since then, but without the same success, although they are still quite popular.
The Spiritualized website where they have a good deal of unreleased and old material in mp3
bonus.. someone has put up a full Spacemen 3 concert from 1989
bonus 2 … Spiritualized® – Live @ Glastonbury 2004 [FULL SET]
Nice post. I like Spacemen 3 quite a bit, though they could be overly reverential in some ways. Spiritualized I’ve always had mixed feelings about, sort of admiring all their JAMC style stuff and disliking the slower paced stuff (though Pure Phase is a pretty great album). Always rated the Darkside who were others from Spacemen 3 a bit more – though they had their problems too. Also I’ve never much enjoyed the drugs schtick… then again I read an interview wiith Pierce over the Summer and he came across as a fairly decent human being.
