A lovely bit of film describing the nil all draw between  A.C. Milan and Athlone Town in the 1975 EUFA cup… and John Minnocks penalty miss.

Athlone lost the return leg 3 nil.

A great article on it from “A History of Athlone Town FC”

There’s some great pictures of the AC Milan players getting off the team bus in Athlone in their nice suits and expensive shoes and finding themselves up to their ankles in mud.

A gem. I always thought it was a pity Minnock is remembered mainly for missing the penalty. My father reckoned he was one of the most gifted players the League produced. I’d love to see Athlone back in the big time, they’re a prime example of why the two tier system has been a disaster for several clubs. They, Limerick, Waterford and Finn Harps have been too long in division one while the likes of Fingal and Monaghan were welcomed into the Premier Division.

Lots of excitement down here alright about Limerick finally getting back up.
It feels hard to believe considering the last 15 years in the doldrums that Limerick once saw some of the action celebrated in this recent radio documentary. Featuring another fine LOI forward-Des Kennedy, an excursion into Europe (Bernabeau) and Eoin Hand, Phillip Greene etc. Nice.

Back when a form of social democracy ruled in European soccer and each country, no matter how powerful their league, got one team in the European Cup so Limerick could draw Real, Dundalk Liverpool, Spurs and Porto, UCD Everton etc.
Great Limerick team back then, Johnny Walsh was one of the best midfielders ever to play in the league, Brendan Storan, Tony Morris, Des Kennedy etc. were no slouches either.
Limerick’s own Lee Lynch was fantastic for Sligo Rovers this year, hope he’s not going back to his home club any time soon.

My daughter, who leaves me in the ha’penny place when it comes to pedantry, and who has a burning commitment to sporting justice AND hates the EPL, starts to fume visibly anytime anyone uses the term ‘Champions League’, on the entirely reasonable basis that most of the teams in the league stages are not ‘champions’. A losing battle, but I have to admire her for it.

It looked a fairly soft penalty award too.

Ah, what’s wrong with soft penalties?
